MacDonald JackMacDONALD, John 'Jack' - (1940 - 2021) -The family of Jack MacDonald sadly announces his passing on January 7, 2021 at Lakeridge Hospital in Oshawa, Ontario.

Jack was born in 1940 in Nakina, Ontario to Kenneth Robert and Hilda Sigridur (Eggertsdottir) MacDonald.

Growing up in a small town in Northern Ontario, Jack learned to love the outdoors and formed many friendships that continued during his entire life.

Jack remained in Nakina until he completed grade 10. At that time, he moved to Nipigon to live with his sister Lorraine and her family so that he could complete high school. Those were years he remembered fondly and of which he often spoke.

In 1958, at the age of 18, Jack completed his electrical operator training and began work with Ontario Hydro.  From 1959-1966 Jack worked at RL Hearn in Toronto and Lakeview GS in Port Credit; then in 1966 he and his family moved to Thunder Bay.

In 1967, Jack became an elected officer with the union and in 1972 became the thermal representative on the bargaining team. Before long, Jack became 1st Vice President and Chairman of Collective Bargaining and ultimately President of the Ontario Hydro Employees Union, a position he maintained until he retired in 1993.

Jack was passionate about both his family and his career. He will be remembered by those who knew him for always fighting for what he thought was right.

Jack retired to Lindsay and spent many winters in warmer southern locations. At home, Jack loved to cook and entertain and was always surrounded by family and friends.

More recently, Jack moved to an independent-living retirement residence in Pickering, where he thoroughly enjoyed being out and about in the community.

Jack was predeceased by his parents, his brother Bob and his wife Sheryl, and by his sister Lorraine and her husband Murray. He is survived by sons Ken MacDonald (Anne) and David MacDonald (Ruth), their mother Sylvia MacDonald of Thunder Bay, and grandsons Mark (Chantelle), Paul (Karen), Andrew (Melissa) and Ian (Elaine), as well as great grandsons Finley and Duncan. Jack is also survived by Kathy MacDonald and his dear friend Mary de Vries.

As per Jack's wishes, there will be no service at this time. Cremation has taken place. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements entrusted with Ogden funeral home, Scarborough.

Please reach out to those you love during these difficult times, and when safe to do so, greet them with hugs.
