Thompson GordTHOMPSON, Gordon Malcolm - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gord on May 4, 2021 in Toronto at the age of 74.  Our sadness is tinged with gratitude and a sense of relief that he is no longer at the mercy of Alzheimer’s – a disease that has robbed us of the person he was for the past 9 years.

He is mourned by this wife of 46 years, Susan (Spragge), and his children: Ian Thompson (Julie), Janet Zed (Peter) and Kelsey Sherriff (Adrian).

“Gordo” adored and was adored by his 6 grandchildren: Max, Hunter, Thompson, Sam, Lillian and Connor.

Predeceased by his older brother Ron in 2014; he also leaves behind his best friend and twin brother Norman (Jennifer).

Gord was born and raised in North Vancouver. He had an outstanding career in the financial services sector, starting with a 23 year stint with the Bank of Montreal, beginning as a teller in Vancouver and ending up as Vice President of Toronto District. After leaving the Bank, he went into the home building industry where he served as president of the Toronto Homebuilders Association and later president of the Canadian Home Builders Association. Thereafter he held a number of keys roles in various companies and organizations: Canadian Finance and Leasing Association, Newcourt Credit Group (which ultimately became the CIT Group), NCE Resource Group, Sentry Select, Interpipeline and Crystallex International.

From his earliest days as a Queen’s Scout in British Columbia, Gord loved the outdoors. He enjoyed golf at Summit Golf Club and Mad River, skiing (and social life) at Beaver Valley, sitting on the beach in Captiva, or doing outdoor projects around the house.  Gord was a putterer. His children fondly referred to him as “daddy doozer”. But he was happiest at the farm in Mulmur. He could most often be found riding on his tractor doing some random chore, with a cigar in his mouth and trademark baseball cap on his head. He adored his dogs, especially Josh whom he loved unconditionally. Josh is still hoping that Gord will come home and once again feed him people food.

We would like to thank the staff at Belmont House and the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute for their excellent care of Gord over the last few months of his life.

A private family service will be held and once the world has returned to normal, we will have a party in his honour.

If you wish, a donation may be made in Gord’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Society (https://alz.to/) or CAMH (https://www.camh.ca/).
