Cox VeraCOX, Vera Winnifred - Vera passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, June 6, 2021 well into her 106th year.

Vera was a lifelong resident of Brampton, eldest daughter of Fred & Rose Cox.

Vera is survived by sisters, Gwen and Margaret. Predeceased by sisters, Lillian, Velma, Hazel and brother, Allan. Lovingly remembered by her many nieces and nephews.

Vera was a woman ahead of the times – she worked at A.V. Roe as an electrical inspector on the Lancaster Bomber during war times. After the war ended she became an entrepreneur and purchased Els-Elva’s in 1949, a ladies and children’s wear store in downtown Brampton. She successfully operated her business expanding it to include yarns and it became the place to purchase quality garments and knitting yarns. Her store window displays won many awards during the Brampton Flower Festival. Els-Elva’s was closed on her retirement in 1981.

Vera was a member of Brampton Business and Professional Women’s Club and was the treasurer for a number of years.

Vera was actively involved in The Daughters of England Lodge, travelling to many places for their conventions. Vera was even installed President of the Grand Lodge for Canada!

Vera had a wonderful sense of humour. Being very petite,as they grew up her nieces and nephews would insist on standing back to back with Vera, the goal being to exceed her height. Although small in stature, she had a huge presence in the family and was so very well respected and loved by everyone.

In her retirement, Vera knitted non-stop and donated hundreds of pairs of mittens to the Salvation Army for distribution.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Respecting the current situation and pandemic restrictions, the Funeral Service will be private. Arrangements and livestream funeral service details are entrusted with Ward funeral home, Brampton chapel.
