Charge Elizabeth BettyCHARGE, Elizabeth Jean 'Betty' - Elizabeth (Betty) Charge passed away suddenly but peacefully in the early evening of Friday, June 11, 2021, just shy of her 87th birthday.

Having grown up mostly without her father (Thomas), who died shortly after returning from WWII, Betty grew up with her sister Bobbie (d) and mother Eleanor (d) and a bevy of cousins in Fredricton.

After earning her degree at UNB, she entered Queen’s for her masters studies but suspended that when she married and adopted two sons – Dic (Ellen) and Lawrence (James).

Throughout her life, beginning during her studies at UNB, Betty engaged as a leader of young women in Girl Guides, Girl Scouts, and in the Girl’s Club. She shared her love of the outdoors and the natural beauty and ecology of Canada with many young women as well as her boys.

In the early 70’s, a re-entry into the workforce saw her take on and excel at a career as a civil servant, working in job creation for the federal government, all the while providing a home and guidance to her two growing boys. During those years, she brought skiing into the family, both cross-country and downhill. She also opened the home and family to our dear friend and adopted sister, Ruth. Both her sons went on to complete university degrees and earn their own places in the world, both not without missteps but always with Betty’s support and guidance.

After retiring and moving a short distance to Aurora, she and Ruth became leading members of the Aurora Seniors Centre, where she helped the fledgling organization grow and become one of the most widely attended and successful in all of Ontario. Her two grandsons, Nathan and Mackenzie were added to the family during these years, and were introduced to her passions for nature, outdoor activities and card playing. In recent years, she added Bid Euchre to the card games she had always enjoyed (and been so VERY accomplished at) – Bridge, Oh Hell and Hearts among them. She still taught Bid Euchre at the Centre up to the beginning of the pandemic, having backed away from her other volunteer roles she’d taken on over the years.

Though her boys and grandsons lived at great distances, she was in regular touch with them by phone, and visits when possible – spirited conversation and laughter during the days at the lake or at home, and long animated and fun evenings over several games of cards are something we will all remember with fondness.

She was a woman of remarkable intelligence, quick to laugh and tease, a voracious reader, and not afraid to stand up for what she believed in. Though we are saddened to no longer enjoy her love, laughter, wisdom and card-playing prowess, we count ourselves lucky to have been a part of her life. She will be greatly missed by all of us.

Arrangements entrusted with Thompson funeral home, Aurora.
