Salerno SerafinaSALERNO, Serafina (Smeriglio) - God called Serafina home on July 20, 2021.

She is now reunited with her husband Luigi, son Guido, granddaughter Rosanna, siblings and many other relatives and friends.

Survived by her daughters, son-in-laws, and daughter-in-law, Maria and Mimmo Scarello, Carmela & Gianni DiCecco and Mary Claire Salerno, grandchildren Sandra, Gabriele, Fabrizio, Paolo, Paola, David, Tony, Jessie, Rocky, Alessandro and Sarah, and great grandchildren Alessia, Daniela, Luca, Sabrina, Anthony, Matthew, Benito and Mirabella and siblings Maria, Giuseppe and Silvia.

In her 99 and half years of life, Serafina, known as Finuzza to those close to her, had many stories to tell.

She was born in Montalto Uffugo, Calabria where she helped deliver babies, snuck around to meet Luigi (her Gigi) under the olive trees, cared for her 3 kids while Gigi was at war and later making money for the family, leaving Italy by boat with all her money tucked under her sweater to be reunited with her husband in Argentina, and then finally leaving to settle in Toronto.

She continued her calabrese traditions and we all loved her maccarruni, cuddruriaddri, patate, pizza and her grandkids will always remember her magical jug of Tang. Although she spoke a few English words her smile and cackling laugh were contagious to anyone who met her. She was strong, fierce and had a big heart.

She peacefully died at home and we take comfort that she didn’t suffer. We will forever carry her in our hearts.

Visitation was held at DeMarco Funeral Home, Toronto on Friday, July 23rd, 2021. The service will take place at St. Wilfrid's Roman Catholic Church, 1675 Finch Ave., Toronto on Saturday, July 24th, 2021 at 9:30am

We kindly remind all guests who are coming to pay their respects, to always remember to practice physical distancing and to avoid all physical contact.
