HALTER, Howard 'Howie' N. - (January 2, 1946 to August 3, 2021) -
If you knew Howie Halter, you knew his three essential traits: Great hugs, corny jokes and a fierce pride in his family.
Howie grew up on Cedarvale Ave. in Toronto with parents Ben and Sarah and older sister Elaine (Arny) Handelman. He was a stellar athlete who refereed in the International Hockey League while pursuing a career in computers.
When Howie and Eva became parents, he imparted to daughters Amy (Janos) Pataki and Marni Halter (Aaron Del Rizzo) life lessons in self-esteem, proper grammar and the correct way to throw a baseball or spiral football. He emphasized the value of education even though he once tried sawing off the legs of a desk in kindergarten.
With his beloved grandchildren Ella, Rebecca, Inara, Marcus and Jonah, Zaidy thrilled in lacing ice skates, crawling through pillow forts and doing goofy impressions. No one sang Happy Birthday quite like him, which is a good thing.
Uncle Howie to his Handelman nieces and nephews (Jill, Kenny, Judi and David and their partners and children) and Marlee Harendorf-Gold. “Big Howard” to cousins Gale Rubinstein and Howard Ovens. “Little Howard” to his Kornblum relatives.
His unexpected death at home from heart issues has rocked us to the core.
The funeral service will be live-streamed via the website of Steeles Memorial Chapel.
Hug your loved ones.
