GONSHOR, Chana (née Szlang) - (January 6, 1919 - October 19, 2021) -

Chana passed away peacefully, 3 months short of her 103rd birthday, after a full life lived with song, optimism, and a smile for everyone.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 63 years, Israel “Ultche”. Her parents Shmuel and Freydl Pasternak, her sister Feygele and her entire family all perished in the Holocaust.

She was the beloved and very proud mother and mother-in-law of 3 sons, Abe and Annie (Young) and Shirley (Bomer z”l) , Aron and Anna (Fishman), and Sam and Judy (Posternak) of Toronto. Raizel (Fishman) Candib was like her own child to her.

Chana’s love for her nine grandchildren and their spouses knew no bounds; Michael Gonshor and Jackie Herman, Josh Gonshor and Debbie Schwarcz, Sarah Miriam Gonshor z”l, Ben Gonshor, Yona Gonshor and Robert Bohbot, Frayda Gonshor and Rabbi Yonatan Cohen, Adam Gonshor, Danny Gonshor and Julia, Bram Gonshor and Robin. She was also ”Bubby Chana” to Katherine “Chavele” Candib whom Chana included in her list of grandchildren.

Chana was blessed to know and enjoy the thrill of 9 great grandchildren who were equally blessed to have her in their lives: Hoshaya, Gavriel, Amarya, Emanuel Cohen, Emma and Sophia Gonshor, Shiloh, Izzy, and Theo Gonshor.

We are all grateful to Eileen Katz, Director of B’nai Brith House where Chana spent 15 happy years, enjoying the company of her co-residents and the careful and loving attention of Eileen. Her caregivers in the last few years, ensured her quality of life, her dignity, and our peace of mind. We cannot thank them enough for their devotion and respect with which they treated our mother and mother-in-law. Thank you, Dorrie, Flossy, Melody, Odette, Violetta. Daria, you were like a daughter to her and she considered you family, just as we do. Chana’s last few months were spent in the Kastner Pavilion of Eldercare. We could not have asked for kinder or more caring treatment than she received from all the doctors, nurses and

PAB’s on the 6th floor. Our mother and mother-in-law was fortunate to have been able to spend her final months in that environment and for that we are most grateful.

Donations in Chana’s memory may be made to the Jewish Public Library 514-345-2627.

Arrangements are entrusted with Steeles Memorial Chapel and Paperman & Sons.  A private funeral will be held on Thursday, October 21st. A zoom link for Shiva will be available.
