Van Halteren Mengsje NancyVan HALTEREN, Mengsje 'Nancy' (nee van de Geest) - (1931 - 2021) - Mengsje (Nancy) Van Halteren (nee van de Geest), died peacefully in her home at The Meadows at midnight on October 20, 2021 with loved ones at her side.

She was surrounded all week by children, friends, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren as they sang hymns, read the Bible and prayed with her.

She peacefully and graciously welcomed this final chapter of life, that final bridge she must cross to meet her maker and Creator.

Mengsje was revered as a Matriarch to this great and crazy Van Halteren family. She will be missed by all and remembered for her strength, her constant smile, how she laughed at everything and above all her reliance on her Lord and Saviour.

Born on January 22, 1931, her birthday was always a point of confusion as her father had not registered her until the day later, and her official birthday became January 23, 1931. Just as she came into the world on a date nobody could ever get right, she also left this world just barely still living somewhere between October 20th and October 21.

Born to a dairy farmer in Spakenburg in 1931, Mengsje grew up with a love for farming, gardening and cows. As a young girl she would sell milk to the townspeople on her bicycle, wearing her Dutch ‘costume’. She married Aart Van Halteren in Spakenburg January 20, 1954. Soon after, they immigrated together to Canada in search of better opportunities.

Speaking no English, she built a life with her husband in Richmond Hill. It was not easy with very little money, no English and the effects of war always plaguing her husband. They had 9 children together and always enjoyed a large garden, animals and many vacations.

Today she is survived by her 8 remaining children and their spouses, a legacy of 32 grandchildren and 17 greatgrandchildren. In order: Joe, Will (ⴕ deceased), Jack, Tina, Art, Nick, Dave, Tim and Rita and their many offspring.

Known to all as a unique lady, her and Aart were not without their struggles and hardships, yet they remained faithful to God and believed in His promises. Mengsje LOVED to garden and often received notable recognition for her wildflower garden from the Horticultural Society. She also loved to laugh and easily went along with the many tricks and jokes her children and grandchildren always played on her.

It is hard to find a photo of Oma (Mengsje) not smiling, she could walk up to anyone and say “Hallo!” in that strong Dutch accent and all would remark on what a cute sweet lady she was. But most of all she placed her full assurance in the Lord, our heavenly Father and on her numerous calls to any and every one of her children and grandchildren she often ended with “may God bless you” and she believed it with every ounce of her heart.

May God bless you Oma, Mum, Mengsje as you enjoy your heavenly home.

Arrangements are entrusted with Thompson funeral home, Aurora.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Nancy's memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
