His most accomplished teaching years were at Fern Avenue Public School. His choir and orchestra won multiple Kiwanis awards. He was a beloved, passionate and talented teacher.
His students from Fern wanted to continue singing/playing with him after graduation, so the Fern Alumni Chorus and Orchestra was formed. In 1972 The Fern Alumni travelled to England, Scotland and Wales for a monthlong tour.
They sang in many famous cathedrals and churches.
In 1975 they made a three-week tour of Western Canada.
Their last concert was held in 2014. In retirement, David and Carole spent many years travelling in their narrowboat through the canals of England, Scotland and Wales.
