CESTA, Carolina - January 19, 1929 – May 14, 2022
Carolina Cesta (née Pisegna), was born on January 19, 1929, in Collelongo, Abruzzo, Italy, and passed away, on May 14, 2022, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 93.
Predeceased by her husband Fortunato and brother Antonio.
Survived by her sisters Maria and Felicetta.
Loving mother to Tony and devoted grandmother to Carolyn, Robert, and Luciano.
Cherished Zia to many nieces and nephews and godchildren.
She will be forever loved and remembered by her family and large community of friends.
Carolina's first two decades of life were spent in Collelongo, a small town in Abruzzo, Italy, collecting water and wood and farming to help support her family.
At age 24, she immigrated to Toronto to marry Fortunato, and soon arrived their son, Tony.
She was a pioneer and amongst the first immigrants from her town joining the growing community of Italians in Toronto who worked hard to make a good life for themselves, their children, and future generations.
She worked for 37 years in a series of factory and textile jobs including at a flag factory where she proudly sewed the first giant flag that flew on the CN Tower.
After retirement, she dedicated herself to volunteering at Villa Columbo for 23 years, until age 88.
Her faith and church community in the Dufferin and St. Clair area of Toronto were a central part of her life.
She had an active lifestyle up until a few months before her death, with her days filled by tending to her large vegetable garden in the summers, baking cookies, making pasta from scratch, and cooking her specialty – lasagna – for her family.
Friends may call the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held the following day, Thursday, May 19th, at St. Mary of the Angels Church, 1481 Dufferin St., at 10:00 a.m.
