Needham MaryNEEDHAM, Mary Elizabeth  - December 15, 1939 – January 6, 2018

It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of a beautiful spirit and a beloved wife, mom, grandma and friend.

Predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Ethel Farr, sisters Jean (Clark) and Margaret (Calder) and brother Joey.

She leaves her loving family: husband John, children Andrea (Andrew Lawson) and Jacqueline, her much adored grandchildren Charlotte, Ellie and Sawyer, brother John and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mary was born in Claremont, Ontario, and grew up in Orillia.

She attended Ontario Ladies' College then McGill and Toronto Universities, graduating with a Master of Social Work degree. Kind, wise, giving and compassionate, she woke up every morning with purpose and optimism.

She had a special interest in children and women's issues and was a strong advocate for vulnerable people and social justice. She found a spiritual home within the Unitarian Congregation, whose values aligned with hers, and was an active member. Her volunteer work was extensive throughout her life and she was involved with Oomama (Grandmothers to Grandmothers in Africa), among many others.

Mary was a selfless, energetic, caring and determined woman who had a deep connection to the world and the people in it. She unconditionally loved her family. She enjoyed visits from her cherished grandchildren, helping others, good books, English shows, Saturday crosswords, travelling and the family cottage.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

A celebration of her life will be held Sunday, January 28, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga, 84 South Service Road, Mississauga.
