Antler EricaANTLER, Erica "Rickey" (nee HELLER)  - Died peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 in the company of her daughter, Susan, and one of her dedicated caregivers.

Rickey was preceded by her wonderful husband and devoted companion of 64.8 years, Earl.

Since Earl's passing almost two years ago, Susan and a team of committed caregivers looked after Rickey, enabling her to live out her life with dignity at home, on her terms.

Born in Schweina, Germany, at three years of age, she and her mother, Augusta, followed her father, Oscar, to Canada, eventually establishing their home in Toronto.

The family grew with the arrival of Rickey's two sisters, Cathy and Margaret. She was an inspiration to many by overcoming and not being held back by the terrible and debilitating consequences when injured by a drunk driver in her teenage years.

She also successfully fought, at different times, breast, skin and kidney cancers. Rickey built a fulfilling life through her involvement in the workplace, the home and through community activism. She was particularly proud of her service in the 1970s and 1980s as the secretary at Clinton Street Public School.

Rickey gave generously of her time to organizations such as the Parkdale Seniors & Adults Club, the Toronto Western Hospital Women's Auxiliary, Wellspring and The Compost Council of Canada.

Rickey met the love of her life, Earl, at Redeemer Lutheran Church and together in faith, they built a lifetime of community nurturing and involvement. Her awards included the Queen Elizabeth II Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals.

Her family extended to include friends in Toronto and in Utopia, celebrating their successes, cheering them on and being there in times of need. Her "rescue" dogs (and one cat) as well as urban wildlife, including sparrows and squirrels, were important to her.

A determined and caring leader, Rickey will be greatly missed by her family, neighbours and friends. Reflecting the love of her church, visitation will be at Redeemer Lutheran Church (1691 Bloor Street West) from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 28th with her Funeral Service at 1:00 p.m. and Interment to follow.

If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Toronto Wildlife Centre.
