Martin Eric Zatzman
1953 - 2024
ZATZMAN, MARTY – Our wonderful and charismatic Papa Marty passed away on Yom Kippur morning, 12 October 2024 in Toronto, after a short, but courageous battle with cancer, age 71. Beloved husband of Belarie, his girlfriend from Camp Kadimah of 50 years. Loving and inspirational father and father-in-law of Noah, Samahra and Ari, and Sariana. Dear brother and brother-in-law of the late Steven z”l and Arlene z”l, Ian and Debbie, Ray and Michelle, Shaynie and Leslie, and Avi and Heidi. Cherished son of the late Miriam z”l and Myer z”l. Wonderful son-in-law to Ruth and the late Gurion z”l. Devoted Uncle and Great-Uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Marty proudly grew up in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, on Slater Street, attending Dartmouth High School. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s, Dalhousie, and the University of Toronto. An actual rocket scientist! Marty was a proud physics and science teacher and department head in the Toronto Board (Central Tech, Central Commerce, Runnymede, Vaughan Road) and also taught at UTS and CHAT.
Marty was a rock star extraordinaire – music was at his very core. He was an outstanding guitarist and the proud band leader of Backtrack; a devoted member of KlezKonnection; creator of Teacher Rock bands wherever he taught; and a mentor to many young musicians. Twist ‘n shout!
Marty was both camper and staff at Camp Kadimah in his early years, returning with his family from 1996-2005 as Assistant Director and then Director. Kadimah was a huge part of his heart.
