Smoljo IlijaSMOLJO, Ilija   - It is with great sadness that the Smoljo family announces the passing of their beloved Ilija on January 8, 2019, at the age of 85, after having spent his last days in the palliative care unit at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, where he received wonderfully compassionate and professional palliative care.

Ilija was a devoted husband to his wife of 54 years, Nevenka, and a loving father to his son, Miles Miloš.

Ilija was born on March 23, 1933, in Jajce, a city in the region of Bosnia.

He emigrated from Yugoslavia to Canada in 1962, and built a life in Toronto with his wife and son.

Ilija was an active member of Toronto's Serbian community, always willing to support good causes.

Ilija's son, Miles, read the following passage at his funeral, which was held on Wednesday, January 16, 2019: Dad, we will forever remember your warm smile, your caring heart, your gentle strength.

You were always there for our family, both at home and everywhere in the world where our family lives.

You always lived a life of honesty, integrity, industry and generosity. You truly embodied the Serbian ideals of cojstvo i junaštvo, of dignity and courage. We love you so much and you will be missed every single day, but our many fond memories of your wonderful wit and beautiful soul will ease our sorrow and grace our lives. Memory Eternal - Vjecnaja Pamjat.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that family and friends please consider making a donation to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto or to the Serbian Orthodox Christian Church.
