Maloney ColinMALONEY, Colin Joseph - (1932 - 2020) - Passed away peacefully on December 21, 2020 after a long illness.

He was the sixth child of Annie and Joseph Maloney of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Predeceased by his parents and siblings Wilfred, Millie, Kay, Irene, Helen and James; survived by his wife Gail, her children, Sarah, Matthew and Jason (tragically killed in an accident November 15, 2020) and Gail and Colin’s son Michael and grandchildren Zoe, Joshua, Colin Jr., Benjamin, Abigail and Lucas.

Colin was educated at St. Mary’s University School, Halifax. He entered the Society of Jesus at a young age in 1951 and after two years of spiritual training and two more in the humanities he studied philosophy in Toronto and Spokane, WA, then taught for two years at Loyola High School in Montreal.

In 1960 he was sent to study theology in Innsbruck, Austria where his skill and toughness in hockey won him notice and notoriety among the Europeans on his team. In 1964 he went to the Gregorian University in Rome where he completed doctoral studies in theology. In 1966, he returned to Canada and was named professor of theology and a year later Dean at Regis College in Toronto. In 1970-71 he was named Rector at Regis College where he encouraged the creation of The Toronto School of Theology, an ecumenical federation of theology schools federated with the University of Toronto. He left the Jesuits and was married in 1977.

From 1983 until 1999 Colin served as Executive Director of the Catholic Children’s Aid Society (CCAS), during which period he was awarded the Fellowship of Man Award for outstanding scholarship, leadership and commitment to the universal well-being of children. At the time, as well, he joined the board of Daybreak, the first l’Ache Community. Later, and for some years after his retirement from CCAS, he served as president of the International l’Ache board, based in France.

Colin enjoyed travelling, spending time with his friends and family and particularly being with his grandchildren. His greatest joy was to be invited to share in the lives of others with whom he offered unfailing love, good humour, sound wisdom and a steady absence of judgment of others - whether they were his Jesuit colleagues, his co-workers in social services, or his family and friends.

He was respected and admired by colleagues and loved with great affection by his friends. He will be missed also by many who profited beyond measure from his personal encouragement and guidance.

Arrangements with Rosar-Morrison funeral home, Toronto.
