Patterson DerekPATTERSON, Derek Robert - We are very sad to announce the passing of Derek, on Monday, October 4, 2021.

He was born in Newcastle England on April 11, 1926. At the tender age of 3, he emigrated to Canada with his parents and sister Joan. Derek joined the Canadian Air Force and competed his training to be a Navigator Bombardier when he was 17. Upon leaving the Air Force he decided to focus in on business.

This journey led him to successful career with Shell Canada which lasted 37 years. During these early years, Derek fell in love with and married June Bernice Lawrence. They wed in 1949 and in 1956 they happily celebrated the birth of their son, Gregg. Derek and June were married for over 50 years. In the year 2000, June sadly passed away from cancer.

The year 2001, marked a new beginning for Derek, who, while vacationing in Florida, met the second love of his life, Sally Smith. Sally, originally From Michigan, had recently relocated to Florida. Derek happily, found himself with, not only his Canadian family, (son Gregg, daughter in law, Gayle, grandsons Bryan and Trevor) but also his American Family, with Sally and her 3 adult children, (Kip, Therese, Michael and their families.)

There are many things we loved about Derek and for which he was iconic. He had a hearty, infectious, unmistakable laugh. (You always knew when he was in the room, the one beside yours, or the one beside that.) His mind was razor sharp with a wit to match. He was a lovable prankster. He was mathematically incomparable. Derek was the definitive Snowbird, who adored the Florida sunshine and lifestyle. He loved sipping on fine scotches with even finer friends. One of Derek’s greatest passions was his cottage. He spent many years creating a beautiful environment with beautiful memories to match.

Derek was a giving, caring person, who will be greatly missed.

The services for Derek will be held at Chapel Ridge Funeral home, Markham. Visitation on Thursday October 14th from 7-9pm and again at 12:00 to 1 pm on Friday. The service will be held at 1:00pm on Friday October 15th at Chapel Ridge.

Donations may be made to The Canadian Cancer Society.
