Hill Richard DickHILL, Dr. Richard 'Dick' - On October 31, 2021 at his home in Toronto, Dick died peacefully after a long battle with multiple myeloma.

Surrounded by his family, he was also blessed with the loving support of his colleagues, friends, and the Shaftesbury community.

Dick was deeply cherished and will be greatly missed by his wife, Lyndel (Miller), of 55 years; his three children, Michael (Mona Foss), Peter (Maria Tassone), and Kirsty; his four grandchildren, Samuel, Alexis, Michaela, and Maxwell; and his siblings, David (Brenda), Julian (Jane), and sister-in-law, Janet.

Dick was born in Lisburn in Northern Ireland where his father, Douglas, had relocated for a teaching position. After several years, Douglas moved the family back to his childhood home at the Old Cottage in Sonning Eye, Oxfordshire. Following his formative years attending the Reading Grammar school, Dick went on to St. John’s, Oxford to study physics and it was here that he met Lyndel, who was studying at the Dorset House School of Occupational Therapy at Headington.

After getting married in 1966, Dick completed his PhD in radiation biology at St. Bart’s, University of London and soon set off across the Atlantic with Lyndel to a fellowship position at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. Here, Dick started his extraordinary career in oncology research that spanned nearly 50 years.

Dick will be remembered professionally for his mentorship, scholarship, many achievements, and his outstanding commitment and contribution to the field of radiation oncology. Across his career, Dick left an indelible mark on many students in his lab, and impacted his field with his research, innovation, and authorship.

Above all else, Dick will be remembered by his loved ones for his warmth, enduring patience, sage advice, integrity and his generous, gentle, unassuming manner. Dick loved spending time in the outdoors, playing cricket in his younger years, hiking, travelling, camping and cottaging, and later in his life building the garden at his Shaftesbury community home with his beloved wife.

An amazing father and grandfather who was a tremendous model and support to his family, Dick was a dear friend to many. His love, positivity, and logical and optimistic outlook on life will be forever missed.

Arrangements have been entrusted with Giffen-Mack Funeral Home, Danforth chapel.
