BURNS, Donald Gordon -
July 8, 1947 – February 1, 2024
Peacefully, in the early morning hours of February 1, 2024, Donald Gordon Burns took his last breath with his beloved daughter, Kate by his side.
Don was born July 8, 1947 in Montreal, Quebec, and was still a Montrealer at heart with his unwavering support of his favourite hockey team, the Montreal Canadiens, and his love of a good steamed hotdog from La Fleur.
Don called Ontario home since 1984 living in Toronto, Mississauga, Brantford and most recently, Hamilton. Don was a lover of all kinds of music - from mainstream to what his daughter called "really weird." He appreciated it all. Don was an advocate for the HIV/AIDS community, living with the disease himself for 40 years.
Born with hemophilia he was the first hemophiliac to survive a routine appendicitis operation and he greatly supported the work of the Canadian Hemophilia Society.
Don was predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Viola; his brother, Edward (Ted), and his sister, Carol, and her husband, Ronald. He will be dearly missed by all of his friends at Caroline Place Retirement Home who showed him so much compassion and friendship in his last 3 years.
He is survived by his daughter, Katharine (Kate) and her husband, Danny; her mother, Gail (Paul); and his nieces, Carolyn (Paul) and Tracy; and their children, Kaitlin, Justin, Aidan, Julian and Callum. He will be missed by his old Montreal friends and all extended family.
Special thanks to all the staff at St. Joseph's Hospital, Hamilton, for their compassionate care these last few months.
Cremation has taken place. A small Interment Service will be held on Monday, March 4, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Glendale Cemetery, 1810 Albion Rd., Etobicoke, at the Pieta Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Canadian Hemophilia Society.
