Passed away peacefully and comfortably on the morning of February 12, 2026, Bowmanville Hospital. Mary Margaret was born in Bowmanville, Ontario on December 8, 1931 to Harvey and Gladys Bonathan. Survived by her loving sister, Jean Rickard, nephews George Rickard (Lana), Doug Rickard (Robin I-R), and Robin Rickard (Wendy T-R), nieces Bev Elaschuk (Mark), and Janice Mills (David). Predeceased by sisters Barbara and Ruth.
After Mary Margaret graduated from high school, she attended dental nursing at the University of Toronto, earning her credentials in 1952. Her adventure took her across the Atlantic to England, where she spent a year working alongside a dentist – though the experience, she realized wasn’t her destiny. Returning home, Mary Margaret channeled her vibrant spirit into a secretarial role at Bowmanville Boys Training School and when it closed, she transferred to Brookside Youth Centre in Cobourg.
Mary Margaret had incredible energy and lived a long, vibrant life filled with zest and authenticity. Fearless in her honesty, she never hesitated to voice her true thoughts. Though Mary Margaret never married, her spirit of adventure took her on journeys across the globe, always in good company with her beloved older sister, Ruth – exploring the world, sharing the joys of travel and discovery to new destinations and creating stories that would last a lifetime. Mary Margaret loved to read a good book and dedicated her time volunteering at the Newcastle Food Bank. Her father, Harvey Bonathan built a charming waterfront cottage in Coboconk, Ontario. Summers there became cherished family retreats, etching unforgettable memories into Mary Margaret’s life.
Cremation has taken place – a private committal in the Spring.

Also thank you to cherished neighborhood friends whose love, kindness and presence have been a comforting constant throughout the years.
