Obituary of Rita McAlindenMCALINDEN, Rita McAlinden - September 7, 1946 – September 15, 2024

Our beautiful mum, Rita McAlinden born September 7, 1946, passed away suddenly on September 15, 2024.

Born in Scotland, Rita was the youngest of eight and is survived by her loving sister, Marjory Rooney and brother Edward Craw.

On October 29, 1966, Rita married the love of her life, Charlie, and their story began. They immigrated to Canada to start building their new life. Always hardworking and dedicated to giving her family a life filled with love, and laughter.

Rita was a loving and devoted mother to Brian (Teresa), Elaine (Ossama), Kevin (Kim), and Andrea (Frank). She was an incredible grandmother to Connor, Liam, Jalil, Rhiannon, Nicolas, Ethan, Hannah, Nolan, Rachael, Julia, and Sophia.

She had worked hard in all aspects of her life and was passionate about her work in sales, a role that suited her charismatic and engaging personality. Rita could start a conversation with anyone, anywhere and had the natural ability to make you feel so comfortable around her, like you had known her forever.

She was kind, generous and thoughtful, always thinking of others, whether it was to lend a helping hand, an ear to listen, be your protector, a cheerleader or advocate. She was the essence of a pure and beautiful soul whose only intention was to love and care for people. She will be remembered for the joy she brought to others throughout her life, especially her children and grandchildren.

Of all the roles in her life, the ones she treasured the most were being a loving mother and ‘Gran’. She was adored by all of us, each having our own place in her heart, and there was always room for us all- she made sure we knew it and felt it too.

Rita will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, her bright light when she entered the room and her comfort food! We could not have asked for a better human to guide us through our lives with such grace and will miss her every day. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her.

A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at 10:30 AM at Oshawa Funeral Home, 847 King Street West, Oshawa, ON L1J2L4.

Larry HoweHOWE, Larry Howe - September 14th, 2024

The family of Larry Brant Howe are gutted to announce his passing on September 14th in Oshawa, his longtime home city, after a long goodbye at the age of 81.

Son of Doris and Don Howe, brother of Rick, loving father to Todd and Brent, grandfather of Aidan Keyser-Howe and Joshua Howe, predeceased by his first wife Louise Patricia Howe (nee Maguire) and loving husband to Yvonne Bastarache-Howe for over 25 years. He will be sadly missed by his extended family including Yvonne’s son and daughter, Richard (Tina) and Lori (Gerry), and their children Kyle, Michael, Keedryn, Sarah, April, and Kiersten.

For those who were not fortunate enough to know Larry closely, he had many interests. For some time, he was an avid RC hobbyist, and could often be seen piloting hand-built radio controlled model boats or airplanes around venues like the RC airfield on the site of Camp X in Whitby, the storied WW2 school for intelligence officers. He was inspired by stories of the heroes of that generation, which included some of his uncles. In later
years, he would produce many oil and acrylic paintings of natural scenes depicting wilderness both imagined and real, often based on a dreamlike interpretation of northern Ontario where he maintained a lakeside cottage, one of many joys he provided for his family.

Music was also central to the life he built, and family gatherings always featured a number of relatives (including his father) kindly providing home-grown country covers and clogging. A General Motors retiree, he worked in the Oshawa factory for his entire career, following in the footsteps of his dad in helping to “moto-vate” Canada, another family tradition. He loved cars and was always interested to know if you were engaging in proper automotive maintenance.

Quiet, stoic, and devoted, Larry lived a good long life and made a difference in our lives with his typical humour and kindness.

Donations to the Michael J. Fox foundation for Parkinson’s Research in his name would be appreciated. Viewing will be at Armstrong’s 124 King Street East, Oshawa from 12 - 2pm, Wednesday September 18th, service will follow at 2pm in the Chapel, with interment at Thornton Cemetery and a reception to follow for which directions will be provided at the service. Thank you for helping to celebrate Larry’s life with us.

Jennifer MetcalfMETCALF, Jennifer Lynn Metcalf (Cropper) - September 12th, 2024

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Jennifer Lynn Cropper Metcalf, of Oshawa, on September 12th, 2024 at the age of 51 years.

Jennifer will be remembered always by her husband of 22 years, Lloyd; her twin children:  Dylan and Eden; parents Brian and Judith Cropper; sister Tricia (Robert) Lehecka and nieces Nicole and Brooke; stepmother to Lloyd H (Diana), Marlow and grandmother to Lillian; as well as numerous relatives and friends.

After graduation from Ajax High School, Jennifer attended McMaster University where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree (psychology and sociology) in 1994.  Jennifer continued her studies in later years receiving a diploma in Medical Office Administration from Durham College.

Jennifer’s world revolved around her two children, whom she cherished and supported with boundless love. She was her children's biggest cheerleader, making sure to show up to every sport, academic and artistic event. One of her proudest contributions to the community was her years spent volunteering at their elementary school. She was the most thoughtful mother, effervescently devoting her time to thinking about her children.

Jennifer's compassion extended to all who crossed her path. She contributed generously to local food drives and donation centres, especially during the holiday seasons in committed efforts to support those in need. Throughout her time spent on earth, she provided a loving and happy home for her dogs and cats. She was an avid lover and advocate for animals, and having provided a beautiful home for her rescue dog, she encouraged others to consider adoption as a loving alternative. She was exceptionally nurturing, and treated all children with the very same care and affection she provided her own. Jen had the most beautiful soul and made such an incredible impact on so many people's lives. She will forever be remembered for her genuine, loving personality, contagious laugh, and every-present smile.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
