He was the beloved husband of Barbara Louise (Phillips) and a devoted father to daughter Deborah Lee and had developed a special bond with his son-in-law Michael. Gord loved and cherished his grandson Gordon Paul and granddaughter Jennifer Anne. Gord felt blessed to know and love his great grandchildren, Sabryn, Jory, Emma Lee and Josephine. He was predeceased by his parents, Gordon C. MacCalden and Evelyn Walker, his two brothers Edwin and Richard Newman Jones, Sister Barbara and great grandson Jory. Gord is survived by one sister – Jacqueline who resides in Kingston ON, He is remembered and mourned by various nieces and nephews.
Born in Boston Mass. On August 3rd 1934, Gord left the USA when he was two years old, to reside in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. His formative years were spent in Middleton, Nova Scotia and various bases throughout Ontario as his step father (Eric Newman Jones) was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces. Upon Eric’s death, Gord was moved to Port Hope with his mother and family, where he met the love of his life, Barbara whom he was married to for over 71 years.
Gord had a life-long career and was a Warrant Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Serving and on-call twenty four hours a day. Postings were domestic as well as international. Gord also served with the United Nations in Ismailia, Egypt. After serving 31 years, Gord was honourably discharged from service, and retired to Port Hope. He then served as a civilian operator for CFB Trenton for the next ten years. An active worker, Gord eased into part time employment with the Port Hope Legion, where he worked as a bartender and volunteered his time, selling poppies and marching in Remembrance Day parades.
Gord spent his retirement, travelling with Barbara, camping with family and friends and was a constant visitor to the Port Hope Library. Many family dinners and good times were held at their home on Heneage St over the next forty years.
The family at this time would like to express our sincere thanks for the great assistance and care that was given to Gordon in his final days. Special note to Dr. Azzopardi, Dr. Mule and nurses both at home and especially at Eds House. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Ed’s House. A private family celebration will be held at a later date
