Peacefully at his home, as per his wishes, in his 95th year, surrounded by his family. Loving husband of 66 years to Josephine “Jo” (nee Kearns), whose devotion, strength, and compassionate care in the past months provided Dad immense dignity- a testament to their profound love. Predeceased by his parents, Wilfred Sutton and Anna O’Connor, his sister Marjorie and brother-in-law Angus Harrison. Cherished father of Chris (Marina), Newburgh; Su (Jim) Brown, Beaver Lake; and Lisa (John Marchenkowsky), Windsor. Adored Pop to Anna (Alex), Graeme (Natosha), Chloe (Cal), Carley (Kyle), Evan (Natalie), Wilfred (Alexandra), Luc (Patrina), Jessa and Maggie. Special Great Pop to James, Camille, Harrison, Calder, Josie, Jack, Campbell, Cooper, Emery, and Lucy.
Dad spent his entire life in his beloved village of Newburgh. He was the local historian and gave enlightening talks (his version) on various aspects of life in the village over the years. Starting at the age of 16, Dad was the last living, founding member of the Newburgh Volunteer Fire Department (established 1947) where he served for 49 years. Dad operated a successful excavation and school bus transportation business in Newburgh and area for many years. Even into his 80’s and 90’s, Dad led a full and busy life. He was Chris’ “Lead Hand” on various projects, Su and Jim’s building consultant on numerous occasions, and Lisa’s number one problem solver via calls from Windsor. He was his grandkids’ biggest supporter, cheering them on at baseball and hockey games, music gigs or theatrical performances. Dad will be missed by all who knew him, none more than his loyal companion Nali, his cat. Dad had a keen sense of humour and was not afraid to use it. He lived life on his terms.
A heartfelt thank you to the PSWs who cared for Dad, to Dr. Liz Touzel for her home visits, and to Monsignor Joe Lynch for his spiritual care.
The family will receive friends at the Wartman Funeral Home, Napanee, on Monday, October 27, 2-4 pm and 6-9 pm. Mass of Christian burial will take place at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Centreville, Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at 11 am with burial to follow at St. Anthony’s of Padua Catholic Cemetery.
