It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Herby Pettigrew on August 23, 2025, at the age of 88. A devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, cherished great-grandfather, and Canadian veteran, Herby will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, enduring sense of humor, and dedication to his country.
Herby proudly served overseas as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, and carried the values of loyalty, courage, and service with him throughout his life.
He is survived by his beloved wife Susan, with whom he shared 53 years of marriage. He was a devoted father to Philip and his wife Pam, and Melissa and her husband Kollin. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Samantha and her husband Mitchell, Evan, Kaleb, and Ryleigh, and his great-grandson Kenny. He is also survived by his loving sisters Violet and Christina.
Herby was predeceased by his beloved son Ian, his parents Alice and Daniel McNeil of Nova Scotia, his sister Doris, and his brother Jimmy.
Herby’s life was one of quiet dedication to his family, his fellow veterans, and those closest to him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43, located at 471 Simcoe Street South, Oshawa, Ontario, on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. All who knew Herby are welcome to attend and share memories.
In lieu of flowers, a donation box will be available at the Legion in support of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43, in Herby’s memory.
