STULAJTER, Edda Stulajter

Peacefully, on Monday, August 3, 2026, at age of 88. She is joining our Papa Rudy after 22 years apart. Loving Mama to Cornelia van der Burg in Lahntal, Germany, Harald (Rowena) Stulajter in Sydney, Australia and Regine (Brian) Marsh in Sunderland, Ontario. Lovingly remembered as Oma by her grandchildren Manuel, Meike, Jeremy, Oliver, Claire, Laura and Colin and blessed with 8 Great-grandchildren. Remembered by her sister Erika in Sindelfingen, Germany. Predeceased by her sister Hilde and her brother Albert (both in Germany) and her sister Wilma (Köstitz).

Edda was born in Köstitz, a German Settlement in Ukraine, on July 19, 1938. As a young child, her family fled westward through Poland into war-torn Germany, sharing the massive fate of millions displaced by shifting borders. After enduring many hardships and a long, difficult journey, the family eventually settled in Hochdorf, Germany, where they began their new life.

Edda met the love of her life, Rudolph (Rudy) Stulajter, and they were married in 1958. Together they began raising a family while quietly holding on to a shared dream of one day immigrating to a country where they believed their children could grow up in peace, security, and freedom. As the years passed, life became busy. Cornelia and Harald were born soon after they were married, and seven years later their family was completed with the arrival of Regine. In those early years, Edda devoted herself to her home and family. She had a lifelong passion for sewing and took great joy in creating beautiful clothes for her young children.

Edda and Rudy successfully operated a construction business in Goddelau, building both their livelihood and a loving home for their growing family. In 1973 the family moved to Ellar, Germany, while still continuing to run their business.

Wherever life took her, Edda had a remarkable green thumb. She loved tending her gardens, especially her cherished roses, and took great pride in cultivating a thriving vegetable garden that provided fresh produce for her family. Our Mama was an exceptional baker who delighted in spoiling us with beautiful homemade treats. Every Christmas, she filled our home with an incredible assortment of traditional cookies, and no special occasion was complete without one of her famous buttercream tortes or Black Forest cakes.

Table tennis was a passion shared by our entire family. Many evenings were spent in the basement, where the table was permanently set up, and Mama and Papa could often be found (and heard) enjoying spirited matches together. Those friendly competitions were filled with laughter, determination, and the occasional playful rivalry. Weekends were often spent playing board games, searching the forests for wild mushrooms, or hiking to discover the countless ancient ruins scattered throughout Germany. Some of our most treasured family memories were made in Goddelau and later in the little town of Ellar, where lifelong friendships were formed and have been lovingly maintained through the years.

Their dream of moving abroad became a reality much later in 1984. Edda, Rudy, and Regine, immigrated to Canada, courageously leaving behind their two adult children in Germany. They settled in Brockville, Ontario, where Edda embraced her new life with the same determination and survival instinct that defined her character.

Music was an important part of our Family Life in Germany and here in Canada. Edda and Rudy were active members of the local German Club in Brockville and shared their love of music by playing their harmonicas in a band. Together, they visited many local events as well as nursing homes, bringing smiles, comfort, and music to many elderly residents.

Following Rudy’s passing and as her health began to decline, Edda moved closer to Regine. She eventually became a resident of Bon Air Long Term Care Home in Cannington. Even there, she continued to brighten the lives of staff and fellow residents with her harmonica, entertaining them until just recently.

Our family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff at Bon Air Long Term Care Home. The kindness, compassion, and exceptional care they showed our Mama will never be forgotten. The extra effort they made to learn a few German words so she would feel more comfortable meant more to our family than words can express.

Mama spent her final days in the Palliative Care Unit at Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay. The outstanding nurses and staff ensured she was peaceful, comfortable, calm, and free from pain. Thanks to modern technology, her children Cornelia and Harald were able to say their final goodbyes through FaceTime, a gift we will always be grateful for.

We will miss your gentle heart, your lovely smile, your strength, your music, your beautiful gardens, and your love for life and nature. Your resilience carried you through unimaginable hardships, yet you always created a home filled with laughter, music and baked goods wherever you planted your roots.

You will forever live on in our hearts, our memories, and the countless lives you touched.

Private arrangements have been entrusted to the Thorne Funeral Home, 109 Laidlaw Street South in Cannington (705-432-2672). Private interment at McNeil Cemetery Wick, Sunderland.
