Passed away peacefully at the Southampton Care Centre on Tuesday, August 25, 2026 at the age of 82, after a long battle with Parkinson’s.
Beloved wife and best friend to Alex Thornburn. Loving mother to John and his wife Lisa, Sandra and her husband Peter Boland, and Diane and her husband Mark McGregor. Proud grandmother to Sarah (Tim), Emily (Todd), Jacob, Jenna, and Kayla, and great grandmother to Hailey.
Velma will be fondly remembered by her sister Joyce Thede, brother Merv Ziegler, sisters-in-law Dawna Ziegler, Margaret Gedge and by many nephews and nieces.
Predeceased by her parents, Roy & Hilda Ziegler, brothers Ken and Fred, by her sister Dorothy and brother-in-law Ross Gedge
Alex and Velma we’re very proud to operate their home farm on the 10th of Bruce for many years and then enjoyed retirement to Southampton in 1992.
A Memorial Service to Celebrate the Life of Velma Thornburn will be held at Southampton United Church on Friday, September 18, 2026 at 1 P.M. A Time of Refreshment and Fellowship will follow at the Chantry Senior’s Centre, 35 Grey St. S., Southampton.
If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Saugeen Shores Hospital Foundation, the Rotary Club of Southampton or to the charity of your choice.
