It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Howard John Alexander on May 17, 2025, at the age of 75.
A beloved husband, father, composer, educator, and advocate, Howard leaves behind a legacy of music, compassion, and service to his community.
Born in Brockville, Ontario, Howard was the son of the late Ed and Betty Alexander and brother to the late Ted and Bruce.
He is survived by his loving wife Deborah (Dunleavy), his children Catherine, Abraham (Rebecca), Charlotte (Jenna), and Liz (Ben) Xafflory,
and grandson Lex. He is also remembered by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Linda and Douglas Stockley.
A passionate musician, Howard performed with the Kingston Symphony at just 16 and went on to play with the St. Johns Symphony and the National Ballet Orchestra.
He composed over 200 works and was a member of the Canadian League of Composers and the Canadian Music Centre.
Howard was co-creator of the opera “The Last Wife” and composer for the “Isobel Gunn” storytelling oratorio, performed in Scotland.
He was also a dedicated teacher, Vice-President of the Upper Canada local of the ETFO, and advocate for arts in Brockville.
In addition to his roles as educator and artist, Howard founded the Riverside Singers and the Brockville Community Choir,
and served as Associate Conductor for The Brockville Concert Band. He remained active in composing and debating musical ideas
until his final days.
A Celebration of Howard’s life will take place on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at Wall Street United Church, Brockville, Ontario.
Doors open at 12:45 PM. Service begins at 2:00 PM.
