In the early morning of Friday, August 28, 2026, Philip Garth Cane, age 67, passed peacefully into his next chapter, surrounded by his family and enveloped in love. Phil was a son, a brother, a friend, a husband, a father, and a papa. He loved deeply, and he was deeply loved.
From an early age, Phil was always on the go. His mother often said, “Phil came into this world on skis,” as he began skiing young, enjoying trips with his father and two brothers. As a teenager, he spent as much time as possible at his beloved Northumberland Forest Ski Club with high school friends. As a young adult, he followed in his father’s footsteps by joining the Canadian Ski Patrol and working weekends at Blue Mountain Ski Resort in Collingwood, Ontario. Summers brought skateboarding and sailing. Phil began sailing in small Cadet dinghies before moving on to Tornado catamarans, spending many weekends travelling to regattas and chasing the next race.
During high school, Phil formed friendships that would last a lifetime and met Terri, who would become his wife. They shared 47 years as a couple, including 43 years of marriage. Together, Phil and Terri built a life filled with joy, laughter, and pride, raising two daughters and welcoming two sons-in-law and four grandchildren.
Phil built a successful career in the audio-visual industry, beginning with local cable stations before advancing to Project Manager for major events across Canada and the United States. His work included auto shows, national award shows, concerts, music festivals, and cultural events, and took him as far as Bermuda and China. Of all the events he worked on, the Calgary Stampede held a special place in his heart, where he spent 23 years bringing his expertise and passion to the event. His career gave him the opportunity to travel widely and created many lasting memories along the way.
Phil worked hard throughout his life to provide for his family and create opportunities for his daughters. He took immense pride in watching them graduate from university, build careers, and create lives of their own. As a Papa, he found new ways to show that same love – making sure there were always bikes and wagons in the garage, travelling hours to pick up a toy he knew his grandchildren would love, and giving tractor rides on his John Deere. For Phil, providing for his family was about more than hard work; it was also about creating opportunities for fun, adventure, and lasting memories.
Phil will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 43 years, Terri; his daughters, Jessica and her husband, Russell, and Chelsea and her husband, Joshua; and his grandchildren, Will and Cora, and Patrick and Summer. He will also be dearly missed by his father, Garth Cane; his brothers, Paul and Todd; his extended family; and his many
close friends. The family finds comfort in knowing that Phil was welcomed by his mother, Shirley Cane, as he passed.
Our family is deeply grateful for the love and support shown to Phil and to us throughout this difficult time. We are especially thankful for the exceptional care Phil received from Northumberland Hills Hospital, Kingston General Hospital, Ontario Health atHome, and Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice. To our family, friends, and caregivers, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Phil’s honour on Friday, September 25, 2026, at MacCoubrey Funeral Home 30 King St.,E. Cobourg, beginning at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Northumberland Hills Hospital, Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice, or the ALS Society of Canada.
