Passed away peacefully on May 8, 2026, with family at her side, after a courageous battle against cancer. She was born on October 25, 1936, in Burk’s Falls to Christian and Alma Boe. She was a bright, inquisitive child and was notably the first girl in her town to wear overalls made by her mother. During the war, she attended a one room country school where her mother had been assigned to fill in for a teacher who was off fighting. She had many fond memories of this time, especially of her father driving her and her mother home on weekends in a horse drawn sleigh. During her teenage years, she worked in the summers as a waitress at Lake Bernard Lodge where her efficiency and friendliness resulted in guests often requesting her. Always an excellent student, Joan graduated from grade 13 with the highest marks in her class. After attending teachers college, she taught for several years in Sudbury before marrying the love of her life, Allen “Con” Mackay. In the late 1950s, Joan and Con moved north to Red Rock, on the shore of Lake Superior, where they raised four children and made many lasting friendships. In 1990, Joan and Con relocated to Lansdowne where they enjoyed living on the river before settling down on the family farm where Con grew up. For the next 35 years, Joan continued to make friendships and connections through her volunteer activities, homecare work, and daily outings with Con to the Bravo and Tims.
Joan Ann Mackay was a lifelong learner who loved books, taking university courses, the Royal Family, British tv, and going on trips with her family to Washington DC, England, Scotland and PEI. She was very passionate and knowledgeable about flowers and could often be found tending to her extensive garden where she spent many happy hours.
Joan was the best wife, mother, and grandmother (“Poppamom”) one could hope for. She loved her family unconditionally and was always there for us. She was very wise, and we benefitted greatly from her insights and sound advice. Joan is survived by her husband Con Mackay; children Jennifer Berry of Gananoque; Dr. Christopher MacKay (Rae Ann) of Wausau, Wisconsin; Carolyn Mackay (Glen) of Yellowknife; beloved Yorkie dog Bailey; and six grandchildren: Brady (McKenzie); Matthew (Jamie); Ian; Emma (Kaid); Christopher; and Connor; as well as niece Melanie Desjardins (Scott) and sister-in-law Marion McKay of Lansdowne. She was predeceased by her parents and eldest son John with whom she is now reunited.
