Allan Kuri

KURI, Allan Juhani ‘John’ – Passed away in his life-long home in Niagara-on-the-Lake on August 10, 2026 at the age of 63. Allan was born in the Niagara area on April 19, 1963 to a Finnish mother and an Estonian father and he was able to fluidly navigate between these two languages. His Finnish cousins from the Thunder Bay area often needed his assistance in helping understand his father. Allan graduated from the University of Guelph in 1985 with a diploma in agriculture. Upon graduation, Allan stayed in Niagara-on-the-Lake, working alongside his parents to operate and manage their 11-acre fruit orchard. Allan’s work ethic, which he inherited from his parents, was unparalleled and together with his mother and father, they managed the orchards, putting in very long days during the bloom in April-May, and during the harvests in June-October. Allan was predeceased by his father Henrich ‘Henry’ (2005) and his mother Alli (nee Orava, 2013). Allan continued to operate the farm after his parents’ deaths and did so right until his own passing. There is some comfort in knowing Allan got to do what he loved to do, right until the end. Allan possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of anything related to horticulture. He had a detailed schedule mapped out in his head outlining exactly when pruning, fruit thinning, spraying and harvesting needed to occur. It was truly amazing. Allan had a gentle and soft spot for animals, and cared very deeply for his cats, with his most recent beloved long-time feline companion Tiksi passing away in 2022. Allan also had a surprisingly adventurous spirt, which belied his very quiet nature – he would surprise his cousin Liisa with being up for any kind of new adventure when she visited from Thunder Bay. Allan had a very strong Christian faith and was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he worshipped faithfully and where he also participated in various work projects and served on church council. He also enjoyed attending the church’s coffee hours and potlucks. Allan is survived by numerous cousins and relatives in Canada, as well as in Finland, Sweden and Estonia. The family would like to extend their deep and heartfelt gratitude to Pastor Larry Ritter from Trinity Lutheran Church, for the compassionate support he provided to Allan over the last several years. Cremation has taken place. Friends are invited to join the family for a Funeral Service in celebration of his life to be held at Trinity Lutheran Church (2027 Niagara Stone Road, Niagara-on-the-Lake) on Tuesday October 6, 2026 at 1 pm.
