Donald Leonard “Dan” Woods died at home on August 22, 2026, at the age of 69. His small home near Six Nations of the Grand River overlooked the fields and river, and he regarded it as the best place he had ever lived.
Dan made friends easily with people and dogs alike. His kindness appeared in practical ways: taking an extra lunch to share, volunteering with the fire department, sending books and letters to someone who had no family, and helping animals in need.
Named for his great-grandfather, Donald “Dan” Matheson, he was known through the years as Danny, Dan, Uncle Dan and Great-Uncle Dan. He often signed his letters “Y.U.D.,” meaning “Your Uncle Dan.”
Dan shared the bass-baritone voice and talent for mimicry found in his father and brother. He was an enthusiastic reader, cartoonist and writer whose imagination and humour often produced elaborate stories and playful adventures.
He also founded a tongue-in-cheek group called Doctors Without Degrees. His curiosity extended to small creatures of every kind, and from childhood he collected and cared for snakes, lizards, frogs, mice, rabbits and spiders.
Dan tried to protect people and animals who were young, vulnerable or in need. He faced illness with courage, independence, generosity and humour. Although he gave up whiskey, his family noted that he kept the sharp wit that accompanied it.
He hoped to see friends and family once more and delayed sharing news of his illness because he did not want to cause them pain. In his final months, he often expressed gratitude for each good day.
Dan’s family thanks the many doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and home-health workers whose care allowed him to remain at home, as well as the staff of Rexall Pharmacy in Caledonia for their friendship and support. They offer special thanks to the health-care worker from Nigeria who brought compassion, humour, family values and respect to Dan’s care.
Dan loved the woods and Northern Ontario, valued close friendships and especially appreciated people who shared his sense of humour. He leaves family and friends who loved him, along with Esmé, his companion of 12 years.
In accordance with Dan’s wishes, his family will keep arrangements simple and say goodbye to him at the farm he loved. His legacy lives on in the people whose lives were touched by his friendship, generosity and humour.
