Alan Westerterp

Passed away suddenly on September 18, 2026. A loving father to Carly (Jeff), Jack (Yoshi), and Ben (Vanessa), and a loving spouse to Laurel Arnott. The greatest joy of his life was being a silly, loving Opa to Aubrey, Kaito, and Emma. Alan was a beloved friend to many and a generous neighbour to anyone and everyone in his community. Alan is survived by his mother Ann and his dad Wolfgang (predeceased), his sister Mary (Sylvain), and brothers Ralph (Eva), Tom and Marc.

Alan Westerterp was an arborist by trade. Through Leuschner’s Lawn and Landscape, he became passionate about finding practical solutions for controlling the spread of invasive species in Ontario. He was often called upon by environmental professionals and members of the scientific community to share data, knowledge, and his experiences eradicating invasives. Because of his extensive knowledge of abatement practices to stop the spread of Giant Hogweed in the province, he became affectionately referred to as “Mr. Hogweed” by members of that community.

Music was a passion which he shared with his cousin Dave, his close friend Adam and his sons by jamming on the guitar or sharing his latest favourite new song. In his downtime, he enjoyed woodworking in the garage of his home on Scugog Island, as well as golfing and boating with friends.

A service will be held at the Low and Low Funeral Home, 1763 Reach Street, Port Perry (905-985-7331) on Sunday, September 27, 2026 at 1p.m. with a celebration of life to follow from 2p.m. to 4p.m.In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Canadian Tire Jumpstart or plant a tree or flower in his honour.
