Elisabeth Johanna Tatar

October 7, 2026

Memorial candle

It is with great sadness, and with deep gratitude for a life so beautifully lived, that the family of Elisabeth Johanna Tatar announces her passing on October 7, 2026, in Brampton, Ontario, at the age of 94.

Born in Pirmasens, Germany, in 1932, Elisabeth was the youngest daughter of Adam and Anna Schmitt. Despite the adversity of the times, she had a happy childhood with stories of friendship and resilience from her community and family. It was there, while working at a local store selling toys, that she met the handsome and flirtatious Edward Tatar, the love of her life. Together, they embarked on their greatest adventure, leaving Europe and coming to Canada in 1954. They traveled to Northern Ontario, then settled in the GTA to raise their family and created a life filled with love and many happy memories.

Elisabeth had a wonderful curiosity about the world. She loved to explore and delighted in discovering different places, cultures, and foods. She carried that adventurous spirit throughout her life and was never afraid to embrace a new experience.

Her favourite place was her little white cottage on the shores of Georgian Bay, where she enjoyed hosting, boat rides, and sunsets. The cottage saw endless visitors over the years, and she was always ready to greet them with her delicious home baking and favourite dishes.

She was the consummate host, and no one ever left Elisabeth’s home hungry. In fact, whether you arrived hungry or not made very little difference. She would make certain you were well fed.

Elisabeth and Edward were animal lovers with a long history of spoiling their pets. If a pet was lucky enough to find their way to these two, they were beloved and cared for their whole lives. Into her final months and days, Elisabeth never forgot to make sure her dog Foxy was cared for, as Foxy cared about her, snuggling into her side all day, every chance Foxy got.

Above all, Elisabeth was devoted to her family. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the greatest joy of her life, and few things made her happier than having the people she loved gathered around her.

Elisabeth is survived by her daughter Barbara (Steven) and son Peter (Donna) along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, Elisabeth’s family encourages donations to the OSPCA.
