It is with great sadness that Bud Barwise suddenly passed away from a stroke on Oct 17, 2026 at an otherwise healthy and very active 91 years of age.
Bud is deeply missed by his loving wife Marion (Hatton) Barwise, sons Wayne (and Kim Barwise), David (and Becky Montaigue), his niece Susan Chipman who has always provided special support, and his four grandchildren who were always a bright joy in his life and with whom he cherished spending time: Jarek, Kylie, Lindsay and Brittany, along with many nieces and nephews.
Bud’s parents Lloyd and Jennie (MacPherson) Barwise raised him on the family farm in West Cape, Prince Edward Island, along with his siblings Betty predeceased (and Glen) Tom predeceased (and Noreen) and Sherrill (and Ann). At the age of 18, Bud left the farm and moved to Toronto with plans to continue on to Australia. Australia never happened – he started working for the Canadian National Railway (until his retirement 35 years later) and met his soon to be wife Marion. They were married in 1956 at the age of 21 and 20, and shared a remarkable 71 years of marriage together.
Family was the most important thing to Bud, and there is nothing he would not do for his family. He always had time for you and always wanted to help out whether you requested it or not. We were often surprised to come home and find some generous gesture he had undertaken on our behalf. He was an engineer and craftsman at heart, always wanting to pull something apart to see how it worked or fix it, if need be. Bud was brilliant and extremely creative, when confronted with a challenge he always said, “you just have to use some ingenuity”. We fondly remember the many family vacations, get togethers and lobster parties with our extended Barwise family in Prince Edward Island, which Bud was always so excited to join, that he insisted we drive straight through without stop overs on route. For almost 20 years, Bud and Marion wintered in Florida, where the grandkids loved to visit, play games, and devour Popa’s famous macaroni.
It brings a smile to our face when we remember Bud’s sense of humour and wit, which was ever present. Bud loved being active and rarely sat still. He played and coached hockey at competitive levels, serving on the executive of the SHA/THL, he loved weekend family baseball and was an avid golfer through the age of 91, with no sign of retiring (from anything). Always an optimist, the week before he died he was shopping for a new car.
Bud, Dad, Popa, we are all so blessed and fortunate for the time we’ve had with you. Your remarkable character, generousity, patience, and love has enriched our lives in so many ways and set a high bar for us to live up to. Words cannot express how much we miss you already. We cherish our memories and thank you for everything.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday November 7th, 2026, all family and friends are welcome. The family will announce the time and location details shortly. If you wish to recognize Bud’s life, in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
