Roy was born on February 15, 1927, in Derby, Derbyshire England, he often entertained his grandchildren with stories of his life in England his favorite being one about catching fish in the creek behind the garden at his home.  He became a master bricklayer, known as one of the few remaining bricklayers in England who could perfect a domed cathedral ceiling.

He served his country in the Second World War, upon leaving the service he swore he would never again pick up a firearm, and he never did.

He married his wife Phyliss on May 6, 1949.  Roy then began a long and rewarding career at Rolls-Royce.
