Bouma NitaBOUMA, Nita

September 17, 1932 - November 29, 2023

"For this God is our God forever and ever; He will be our guide to the end" - Psalm 48:1

On the 29th of November, 2023, at Hospice Simcoe, Barrie, Nita went peacefully into Heaven in her 92nd year after a brief illness.

Predeceased by her husband Okke of 63 years, she is survived by her children Anne and Bert Langendyk, Roger and Laura Bouma, Teresa and Ronald Buschman, and Caroline and Richard Morsink.

Nita was a much loved Oma to 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She was the beloved sister to Lydia (the late Joop) and Celine (Ben) and sister-in-law to Charles, predeceased by sisters Carla and Elisabeth 'Bep' (Jake).

Nita was born on September 17, 1932, in Paramaribo, Dutch Guiana (now Suriname), and moved with her family to Zaandam, Netherlands, when she was 2. Nita's life was marked by World War II, which resulted in her being relocated to Makkum, Friesland, where she later met Okke, which she described as love at first site. Nita was just 15 when her mother passed away in 1947.

When Okke and his family immigrated to Canada in 1951, he promised Nita that she would follow, which she did in 1952. They married in 1953 and settled in Newcastle, Ontario, where Anne, Roger, and Teresa were born. In 1965, Okke's career took them to Montreal, where Caroline was born, and then back to Oshawa in 1983, when they became active members of Zion Church.

Mom loved her plants and caring for her gardens at home and at their church. After Okke retired in 1988, they spent many winters in Florida, which provided mom with more gardens to tend.

In 2008, Okke and Nita moved to Holland Christian Homes in Brampton, where Okke would later pass. As Nita's health declined over the last few months, she would move once more to Barrie to be near her daughter Caroline. Her final days were spent in the care of Hospice Simcoe.

Our family is so grateful to the wonderful staff and volunteers who showed our Mom and our family so much care and kindness through Mom's final days.

Family and friends are invited to join a celebration of life for Nita at 1 p.m. on Monday, December 4th, at  ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME  (124 King St. E.) Oshawa. Refreshments to follow. Private interment to take place at Thornton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Simcoe Hospice https://hospicesimcoe.ca/
