Anthony ‘Tony’ Modde

2025 - February 12, 2025

With the heaviest of hearts, we must announce that Anthony Edward Modde left us suddenly on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at the age of 72. He has now joined his beloved son Brian (2024) and his parents Edward and Adrienne Modde.

Tony’s memory will be forever cherished by his wife Janis (nee Crombey), his daughter Sarah (Steve) Santos, and his daughter-in-law Erica Modde. He was the most cherished grandpa of Jorge and Joaquim ‘Jack’ Santos and Chase, Channer, and Summer Modde. He will be fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends, especially Dave Krogman.

He helped many people from the community with their vehicle needs over his 52 years of being a dedicated member of the Riverview Automotive team until his retirement in July of 2024.

In keeping with Tony’s private nature, his family and close friends will hold a private service at the Haycock-Cavanagh Funeral Home, 409 Nelson Street in Wallaceburg (519-627-3231). He will be laid to rest at Riverview Cemetery at a later date.

Rosaria "Rosie" Carmen (Cassar) Baertsoen

October 16, 1935 – December 25, 2024

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Rosaria “Rosie” Carmen (Cassar) Baertsoen on December 25, 2024, in her 89th year. God called our faithful angel home on Christmas Day, her favorite season of the year, to be with all the angels that have gone before us.

Beloved wife of 63 years to Norbert Baertsoen. Dearest mother to Michelle (Michael) Decock, Christopher (Kerry) Baertsoen, and Pierre (Joanne) Baertsoen. Rosie will forever be cherished and remembered by her grandchildren, Justine (Joshua), Erika (Jonathan), Alicia (Kyle), Juliana, and Hayden. She was predeceased by her beautiful granddaughter, Victoria. Very special Buznanna to Callen, Brenley, and Malia.

Born in Malta, Rosie was the loving daughter of the late Anthony and Rosina (Briffa) Cassar. She was a devoted sister to her siblings: Elvira Wade, Tony Cassar, and Joyce (Ivan) Williamson. Predeceased by her siblings Lina, Doris, Frank, George, and Mary, as well as her dear cousin, Elvira Martini. She will be fondly remembered by her many dear friends, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins from both the Cassar and Baertsoen families.

Rosie immigrated to Canada in 1951 and lived in London, Ontario, before moving to Wallaceburg in 1961 after her marriage. She was a pillar of strength for her family and a devoted Catholic. A member of the Our Lady Help of Christians Parish and the Catholic Women’s League, her faith in God was the foundation of her life, and it reflected in her actions and love for others.

Visitation will take place at Haycock-Cavanagh Funeral Home, 409 Nelson Street, Wallaceburg, on Sunday, December 29, from 2:00-4:00 pm and 6:00-8:00 pm. The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Wallaceburg at 11:00 am on Monday, December 30, followed by interment at Riverview Cemetery.

If desired, donations to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Wallaceburg or the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation: Sydenham Campus may be left at the funeral home (www.CavanaghFuneralHome.ca). Online memories and condolences may also be shared on their website.

October 10, 1968 - November 25, 2024

On November 25, 2024, we said goodbye to John Verstraeten, lovingly known as ‘Whoppo,’ at the age of 56. John will always be remembered as a devoted husband to Lisa, a loving father to Jayde-Ann (Matt), Trenton, and Kanton (Haleigh), and a cherished Popps to Kallum, Stephanie, and Buck. His beloved dog Stella will miss him dearly.

John was the son of the late Joseph and Sharon Verstraeten and the brother of Penny. He is fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, and a large extended family. Known for his love of baseball, garage gatherings, and endless adventures, ‘Johnny Whoppo’ leaves behind a legacy of laughter and cherished memories among his friends and family.

Family and friends are invited to visitation at the Haycock-Cavanagh Funeral Home, 409 Nelson Street in Wallaceburg (519-627-3231), on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A celebration of John’s life will follow at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at 1 p.m., with burial at Riverview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory can be made to the Pet and Wildlife Rescue or the Chatham-Kent Hospice. Cherished stories and tributes may be shared with the family at Cavanagh Funeral Home.

Judith Elizabeth Schoorman (nee Krohn)

Passed away on November 23, 2024

With peaceful but heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Judith Elizabeth Schoorman (nee Krohn) on Saturday, November 23, 2024. Judy was reunited with her beloved husband, Jakob, and leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness.

Loving daughter of the late Lyle and Winifred Krohn and daughter-in-law of the late Jacob and Sophie Schoorman. Judy will be dearly remembered by her brother Charles (Debbie) and sister-in-law Lisa, surviving spouse of her late brother Melvin. She is predeceased by her sister Carol.

A cherished aunt to Angie (Gene), Valerie (Chad), Jon, Joe (Clarissa), Matt (Sue), Raylene (Von), Melissa (Brandon), and a beloved great-aunt to Justin (Moriah), Connor (Alyssa), Kenton, Jordan, Jaicee, Emerson, Alec, Ayla, and Asher, Judy also had a special bond with the many children she babysat, who will carry fond memories of her warmth and care.

Judy’s family would like to extend special thanks to “Her Girls” Shuchi, Pranjali, Erica, and Lynda, who became family to her.

Betty Evelyn Janet DuChene

[1946] - November 7, 2024

Betty Evelyn Janet DuChene of Chatham passed away suddenly in Cancun, Mexico on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at the age of 78. Betty was the daughter of the late Bert and Helen (McPhail) Payne.

Beloved wife of Peter DuChene. Cherished mother of Jennifer Dureno (David) and their children Jacob, Olivia, and Colton; Stefan DuChene (Wendi) and their children Carter, Peyton, and Bennett; Andrew DuChene; and Jonathan (Krista) and their children Micah, Seth, and Leah. Dear sister of the late Ariel Hills, the late Marilyn Kettlewell, the late Robert Payne, Shirley Deighton, and Joan Gardiner.

Betty was an X-Ray technician before leaving to raise her children full-time. She later worked in retail for several years and dedicated her time as a volunteer at her church and within the local community.

Family and friends are invited for visitation at the Haycock-Cavanagh Funeral Home, 409 Nelson Street in Wallaceburg, from 6–8 PM on Tuesday, November 19th. The funeral will be celebrated at Thames Christian Fellowship, 400 Park Avenue East in Chatham, at 1 PM on Wednesday, November 20th. The family will receive guests from 11:30 AM–12:30 PM in the church prior to the funeral service.
