Gordon A. Paisley passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at the age of 97, surrounded by friends, family, and former students in his final days. Gord was a beloved father to Craig (Sue) and Catherine (Grant); a cherished grandfather to Julia and Samuel; and a proud uncle to Jane (George) Paisley-Canning, Judy (Rick) Paisley-McLagan, and Jason Morris. He was also a devoted grand-uncle to Paisley and Bob Canning, and Claire (Ilya) and Sadie Morris. Gord was predeceased by his younger sister Doreen and older brother Bob, both of whom he adored.
A lifelong educator, Gord was known affectionately as 'Lord Gord' at Cartwright High School, where he taught English, French, and Latin, and served as Principal from 1950 to 1984. He continued teaching well into his later years, providing education in mathematics at Durham College and supporting the Durham Board of Education. His dedication to learning and teaching touched the lives of hundreds of students who benefited from his patient and encouraging approach.
Originally from Dunnville, Gord moved to Blackstock in 1950 after earning his degree from McMaster University and became a steadfast part of the community. He valued the lasting friendships he developed, particularly with the Baileys and Kytes, and the calls and visits from former students, coworkers, and friends over the years brought him tremendous joy.
Gord will also be remembered for his ever-shiny, often-red Chrysler convertibles and his love for animals, adopting many strays and frequently finding joy in the companionship of a cat on his lap.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Gord’s life and share memories at the Blackstock Recreation Centre on Sunday, November 10th from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with short remarks at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Gord’s memory may be made to the Ignite Durham Learning Foundation. Memories, photos, and condolences may be shared at Wagg Funeral Home.
