It is with great sadness that the Abbott family shares the sudden passing of Doug Abbott. He was at his beloved cottage on Lake St Peter with Margie, the woman he adored.
Born Gordon Douglas Abbott in Toronto to Margaret and Gordon Abbott, Doug often recalled his mischievous childhood adventures, from newspaper routes to building model trains. He found his musical calling at the People’s Church and under the guidance of Dave Williams, began cultivating his talent as a pianist. There he also met the love of his life, Margaret Phillips, whom he married in 1972.
A devoted father to Billy (Tiger), Marion (Princess), Karen (Sunshine), and Lauren (Angel), Doug’s playful, generous parenting included epic backyard projects, snow slides, and rides home for the entire youth group. His family grew to include sons- and daughters-in-law Rebecca, Giancarlo, Eric, and Geoff—whom he embraced instantly with unconditional love.
Doug transitioned from a career in sales to a full-time musician and piano teacher in the 1990s. His unmatched skill at playing by ear made him a fixture in seniors’ homes throughout the GTA, performing themed shows with passion and originality. As a teacher, he was energetic and kind, encouraging students with custom arrangements and enthusiasm for all music genres.
In retirement, he moved to the Bedford, Nova Scotia waterfront, staying close to his grandchildren. His summers remained at Lake St Peter, where his door was always open to family and friends. He cherished his grandchildren—Will, Sam, Gianni, Lillian, Grant, and Rosie—with deep joy, sharing passions from astronomy to action films.
Doug was a steadfast friend—always ready with help, a smile, and a stop at Tim Hortons. His Evangelical Christian faith anchored his life, and we believe he is now joyfully in the presence of his beloved Jesus, likely seated at a piano once more.
