Peacefully at Ed’s House, Northumberland Hospice, Cobourg on Saturday September 5th, 2026, aged 93 years. Aileen Rutherford (Diamond) of Colborne, daughter of the late Raymond Diamond and the late Marjorie (Steven). Loving wife of the late Douglas Rutherford. Loving mother of Wayne Rutherford and his wife Nancy; Linda and her husband Mark Walas and Greg Rutherford and his wife Sue; predeceased by her daughter Debbie. Grandmother of Jenny, Nikki, Jacquie, Johnny, Mackenzie, Elliott, Julia and Michael; predeceased by grandsons Josh and Jordan. Sadly missed by great grandchildren, Carson, Ahna, Sloane, Charlie, Dylan, Scotty, Josh, Jack and David. Dear sister-in-law of Bernie Diamond of Florida and sister of the late Jim Diamond and sister-in-law of Percy Tyrrell and the late Norma (Rutherford) of Belleville. Sadly missed by Peter and Diana Steven of Cobourg.
Aileen was born in Frankford and lived most of her life in the Colborne area. After a brief time working in Toronto, Aileen returned to Colborne, married Doug Rutherford and took her place on the family farm. Wayne, Linda and Debbie arrived, and the family was complete until some nine years later when Greg was born.
Following many years on the farm, Doug and Aileen moved into Colborne. As a couple they were involved in many community projects. Aileen kept herself busy working as the Manager of The Big Apple gift shop, bookkeeping for several of Doug’s businesses, owning and operating the local laundromat. In recent years, Aileen became Doug’s primary caregiver for over 10 years, following his stroke.
They spent years in Florida, finding many new friends there. Aileen was a lifelong member of Old St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and a member of the Presbyterian Woman’s Association. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Aileen spent her last three years living in Brighton Retirement Residence and truly enjoyed her time there, making more new friends. Aileen was fiercely competitive and loved nothing more than playing cards with family and friends.
A celebration of Aileen’s life will be held at the Keeler Centre, Colborne on Sunday, September 27th from 1–4 pm., with word’s of remembrance at 2 pm. Donations to Ed’s House, Northumberland Hospice, Cobourg, would be appreciated.
