BARNES, Sheila Barnes

BARNES, Sheila Barnes

Passed away peacefully on February 10th 2026 at Marigold Hospice in Newcastle surrounded by family.

Sheila worked so hard and sacrificed a lot for her family. She was a loving Mum to Alison and Philip and his wife Maggie. Incredible Gma/Grandma to Grant, Scott (Alannah) and Lucas. Proud GG to Vera Lynn who is the beautiful daughter of Scott and Alannah. Tragically Sheila is pre deceased by Grant who passed in April 2022.

In the days before Sheila passed it was a beautiful time for us all to hear about the incredible impact that she had on all that she met, and the wonderful stories of adventure she had. Close friends and family had the opportunity to share this time with Sheila. We laughed, we cried and we even shared a glass of wine. What a wonderful, sometimes crazy, rich and full life you had!

Sheila literally saw the world through her occupation of Group and Incentive Events planner at American Express. She was skilled at what she did and was “Large and in Charge” of all that she took on. She loved work so much that she didn’t retire until age 72.

Sheila was born in Manchester England and 1 day before her second birthday, the Declaration of war began WW2. She grew up in war torn Britain and all the struggles it entailed.

The family immigrated to Canada in May of 1970 to Brampton, Ontario. Throughout life Sheila has survived with incredible perseverance with her family always at mind, leading her to start a travel and tourism course at Sheridan College at 45 years old. Graduating the same day as her son Phil and both with honours.

The family would like to thank Marigold Hospice for the incredible setting and care that Mum received in her last days.

A “Celebration of Sheila” will be held in lieu of a funeral at Phil and Maggie’s house as Sheila requested in June.

Please in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Marigold Hospice in Newcastle.
