BLOMME, Sylvia Blomme
March 22, 1942 - June 2, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sylvia Blomme (née Westnutt), who died peacefully at the age of 83 on June 2, 2025, at Lakeridge Health Oshawa, with her two sons by her side.
Sylvia was a woman of extraordinary kindness, compassion, and warmth. A devoted mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law, she offered unconditional love and unwavering support to her family throughout her life. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Sylvia’s nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family. As a mother-in-law, she embraced her daughters-in-law, Tania and Jen, as if they were her own. As a grandmother to Simon, Charlotte, and Dempsey, she created countless joyful memories—baking together, organizing scavenger hunts, playing games, and sharing sweet treats from her always-stocked candy jar. Her thoughtfulness and care made every visit with “Grandma” special.
A lifelong lover of life’s simple pleasures, Sylvia found great joy in reading, painting, spending time with her dogs, gardening, and holiday traditions. She had a keen eye for detail and beauty, and a special talent for making others feel seen and appreciated through small, meaningful gestures. Her home was filled with warmth, laughter, and the love she so freely gave.
Sylvia dedicated her professional life to nursing, beginning her career in hospital settings before moving into private care for children and adults with high needs. Her empathy and skill brought comfort to countless individuals. She was also a passionate advocate for cancer care in her community. Following her own battle with breast cancer in 1993, she played a key role in a grassroots effort that led to the establishment of the cancer care centre at Lakeridge Health Oshawa—an achievement that stands as a lasting legacy of her resilience and dedication. In her later years, Sylvia became the devoted caregiver to her beloved husband, Ray, during his illness with Parkinson’s disease until his passing in 2024. Her grace, strength, and steadfast love during that time were a testament to her character.
Sylvia is survived by her sons, Daniel and David; her grandchildren, Simon, Charlotte, and Dempsey; and her daughters-in-law, Tania and Jen. She was predeceased by her husband, Ray Blomme.
