Peacefully passed at the Serenity Retirement Residence in Barrie on Sunday, December 28th, 2025 at the age of 87 years. Beloved husband of Gerda (née Elzinga) for 64 years. Loving father of Leonard (Phyllis), Vincent (Pauline), Allan (Kimberley) and Graham (Rebeka). Proud grandfather of Steven (Rachel), Katelyn (Roger), Aaron (Julie), Daniel (Heather), Jessica (Joe), Nicholas (Kristen), Evelyn (Ivan), Justin (Elyse), Jacob (Adrianna), Melissa (David), Kristen (Christopher), Annabelle, Isaac and Gideon. Great grandfather of 34 great grandchildren with two on the way. Dear brother of Margaret, Tina and the late Joan and Pieter. Will be missed by many extended family and dear friends.
Henk, or affectionately known as Dad and Grandpa, adored his wife, Gerda, and proudly raised his four sons in the ways of the Lord. He was often found reading countless novels, at his desk drafting engineering plans, writing heartfelt letters, emails or memoirs, or building Lego creations. In his heartier years he could also be found on the golf course or in a fishing boat. Above all, Henk loved his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, and wanted to help others and bring them into the presence of God, as seen by his years of service in the church, as an elder, on charitable committees, or in weekly Bible study groups. He was a sincere, affectionate man who desired to give God glory right up to his final moments of life.
Visitation will take place at the First Christian Reformed Church, 33 Shirley Ave., Barrie on Friday, January 2nd, 2026 from 10-11:30 am. Funeral Service will take place in the sanctuary at 12 pm. Guests are invited to remain for a reception following the service inside the church hall. Interment will take place in the spring at the Barrie Union Cemetery, 338 Sunnidale Rd., Barrie. Donations in Hendrik’s memory may be made to a charity of choice and are greatly appreciated by the family.
