CURNOW, Betty-Lou Curnow
July 13, 1942 - July 11, 2026
Passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Nova Scotia on Saturday July 11, 2026 at the age of 83 years.
Betty-Lou was the beloved wife of the late Robin Hugh Curnow. She was the cherished mother of Grant (Joanne), Darlene (Tony), and Robbie (Rose); devoted grandmother of Natalie (Freddie), Donovan (Kate), Brian, Nick (Andrea), and Tabatha; and loving great-grandmother of Isla, Eden, Sierra, Emily, Levi, Emmett, Auden, Hannah, and Briella.
Betty-Lou Curnow (née Porteous) was a woman of grace, strength, and kindness whose greatest joy was her family. Known for her timeless sense of style, impeccable manners, and caring heart, she was truly a classy lady. She was also strong-willed and determined, never afraid to stand her ground when it mattered.
As a teenager, Betty-Lou spent her summers working at the Salvation Army camp in Sutton, and her faith remained an important part of her life. She began her career at the Parliament Buildings in Toronto, working in the office of the Minister of Transportation, and later worked as a receptionist. She was admired for her professionalism, intelligence, remarkable typing speed, and beautiful penmanship.
A talented and creative woman, Betty-Lou especially loved ceramics and enjoyed attending craft shows with her sister Edith and nieces, Georgina and Marie. She and her late husband, Robin, shared a passion for Standardbred horse racing and looked forward to Saturday nights at Barrie Raceway.
In later years, she loved watching her son Grant and daughter-in-law Joanne’s horse race online.
Betty-Lou also enjoyed training and showing the family’s Collies, Lil Man and Valdie, watching John Wayne westerns, dancing, and entertaining family and friends. Christmas was especially meaningful in her home, where her beautiful decorations, tinsel-covered tree, and thoughtfully wrapped gifts created cherished memories for generations.
As the youngest of four sisters, Betty-Lou loved singing in the school choir with her sisters and was the last of them to pass away. Affectionately known as “Aunt Bubbaloo,” she was a beloved aunt whose warmth and kindness touched countless lives.
Above all, Betty-Lou will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother and great-grandmother, and an extraordinarily hardworking woman whose love, generosity, and beautiful spirit will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
