Age 76, passed away on September 26, 2026, at Lakeridge Health Ajax Pickering Hospital, following a sudden eight-week medical ordeal that began with an aneurysm and resulted in a leg amputation. Over those weeks he endured eight surgeries and fought bravely against several serious infections. In the end, he was too weak to continue the fight. He received exceptional care in the intensive care units of four hospitals, and the family is deeply grateful to the doctors, nurses, and staff who cared for him.
Born in Ottawa, Ontario, on November 26, 1949, Daniel Raymond Dupuis was the youngest of four sons of Lucienne and Lionel Dupuis. When he was nine years old, his father passed away, and Lucienne raised her boys on her own. The hardship taught the brothers strength and the determination to pursue their goals. Known as Daniel to his family, Dan to his friends, and Granddad to his grandchildren, he was a man of faith, music, and family.
In 1969, Dan left Ottawa for Toronto to build a career for himself. He boarded in the home of Dorothy Wheeler, and there he met her daughter, Marilyn. Dorothy quickly became “Mom” to Dan, and on August 22, 1970, he and Marilyn were married. Five weeks before his passing, they marked their 56th anniversary.
Faith was the anchor of Dan’s life. Raised in the Baptist church and later a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, he felt called to ministry from a young age. He started his career in management at Sears before ministerial studies at Canadian Union College (now Burman University) from 1979 to 1982. He began his ministry in 1982 and was ordained in 1986.
He served churches across New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Ontario. For the last twenty years of his service, he was a chaplain, first at Sherwood Park Care Center in Alberta and then at Valley View Residence in Toronto, from which he retired in 2016. A quiet and compassionate pastor, he brought his music to every church he served, playing with an enthusiasm that seemed to lift everyone around him.
Dan was a loving husband who deeply valued Marilyn’s support. He loved to cook, and nothing pleased him more than seeing her enjoy his meals. When they traveled, he would say there was no one else he wanted beside him.
Music was a lifelong companion. At age seven he taught himself to play the acoustic guitar and never stopped playing. He was greatly influenced by Gordon Lightfoot. He was also a loyal fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays. Cheering for those teams tested his patience, but he loved nothing more than seeing them win.
Daniel is survived by his beloved wife, Marilyn; his sons, Michael and Chris (Dawn); his grandchildren, Ren (Megan), Taylor (Kyle), and Addison; and his great-granddaughters, Ellie and Delilah. He is also survived by his brother, Jean-Claude (Nanci); his sister-in-law, Donna, wife of the late Paul; and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Scott and Debbie Wheeler. He will be missed by his nieces and nephews, Jean-Paul, Andre, Donna, David, Simon, Benjamin, and Hannah, and their families.
He was predeceased by his parents, Lionel and Lucienne; his brothers, Paul and Robert (Janis).
Donations can be made to It Is Written, or The A.D.R.A in Daniel’s memory.
