It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Thompson on September 3, 2026 at Lakeridge Health Oshawa, at the age of 83. David was the beloved husband of the late Leila Thompson (2000), loving father of Osei, Carl (Anjalee) and Halima, and cherished grandfather of Sloane and Harlowe. He is predeceased by his siblings Alvin, Van, Euclid and Claudia. David will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews, extended family and many dear friends.
Born and raised in Trinidad, David grew up surrounded by music, community and a deep pride in his culture — a pride he carried with him for the rest of his life. From a young age he dreamed of becoming an engineer and in 1967 that dream brought him to Canada, where he began his career at Trow Group in Toronto before moving to Sudbury to help establish a new branch.
In Sudbury, David made his mark not only professionally but personally. He founded a local soccer team and his legendary Caribbean parties, where he would DJ, brought the sounds and spirit of Trinidad and soul music to his new hometown. It was at one of those parties that he met Leila, the love of his life, and together they built their family in Canada.
Determined to reach his professional goal, David earned his Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Science in Engineering from Queen’s University. He went on to a distinguished career at Trow Group, rising to Technical Director before founding his own engineering consulting firm, which he ran into his late seventies. He took great pride in his contributions to major projects across the country, including the Vaughan subway extension and the Annacis Island Bridge in Vancouver.
David’s life was defined by perseverance, hard work and joy. He never stopped celebrating where he came from and he never stopped believing in the country he chose. His advice to those he loved was simple: do what makes you happy and it will never feel like work.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026 from 12–2 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home (124 King St. E., Oshawa). The funeral service will be held in the Chapel at 2 p.m., followed by interment at Thornton Cemetery (1200 Thornton Rd N, Oshawa).
