DEAS, Janet Kerr “Nettie” Deas
July 15, 1935 - June 11, 2025
Peacefully, and supported by her family, Nettie passed away on June 11, 2025. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and a proud Scot who brightened every room with her warm spirit and wit.
Predeceased by her beloved husband John Deas and parents John and Catherine Houston, Nettie is now reunited with them and her siblings John (Christine) and Rena (Bill). She is lovingly remembered by her sister Margaret (late Jim), her children Beth (Dan) Wright, Andrew (Alice) Deas, and Ann-Marie Deas (Brent Glasier), and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought her endless joy.
Nettie and John emigrated to Canada in 1975, creating a new home while proudly maintaining her Scottish heritage. Her community spirit shone through her 25 years of volunteering at Outreach for Hunger, involvement in her church mission group, and two decades at the Chatham-Kent Public Library.
She was known for her sharp wit, generous heart, and infectious laughter—especially during sing-alongs with her grandchildren. Nettie taught her family to support one another, embrace joy, and find strength in kindness.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, June 12, 2025, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at McKinlay Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 145 Victoria Ave, Chatham on Friday at 11:00 a.m. Cremation to follow.
Donations in Nettie’s memory may be made to Outreach for Hunger. The family thanks the staff at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance and St. Andrew’s Residence for their care.
