DEBRUM, Jose “Joe” DeBrum
May 14, 2026
Joe was a proud and loving father to his daughter, Anita Fernandes, and her husband, Aires, and to his son, Jason DeBrum, and his wife, Rose. He was an incredibly proud grandfather to Jayla, Andre, and Emilia, all of whom brought him immense joy and happiness.
He is also survived by his brothers, Tony (Helena), Louis (Ruth), and Virginio (Triff), as well as his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives he touched over the years.
Born on the Island of Flores in the Azores, Portugal, Joe immigrated to Canada at just 10 years old, carrying with him the values that would define his life—hard work, resilience, humility, and community. Through determination and perseverance, he built a life rooted in family, friendship, and service to others.
Joe had a deep love for soccer and was passionate about bringing people together. Among his many accomplishments, he was a founding member of the Portuguese Club and became the first Portuguese councillor for the Town of Strathroy—milestones that reflected both his leadership and his commitment to the Portuguese community and the town he proudly called home.
Above all else, Joe will be remembered for the way he welcomed people with open arms. He had a grounded perspective on life, a generous spirit, and a strength that made others feel comfortable, valued, and supported. Whether through conversation, laughter, advice, or simple acts of kindness, he made a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
His love for family, his pride in his heritage, and his unwavering work ethic leave behind a legacy that will continue through the many lives he shaped.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Donations in Joe’s memory can be made to the Strathroy General Hospital Foundation, whose care and compassion were deeply appreciated by the family.
The family would also like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Country Terrace Long-Term Care in Komoka for the care, compassion, and kindness shown to Joe and his family throughout his time there.
