It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Manuel Sousa Dias, peacefully on Monday, May 4, 2026, at the Hamilton General Hospital at the age of 93.
Manuel was born on February 10, 1933, in Benfarras, Boliqueime, Portugal. He spent his youth working alongside his family in the agricultural traditions of rural Portugalβa foundation of labour and love that he carried with him throughout his life. Following two years of service in the Portuguese Army, he began a long and fulfilling career with the Portuguese Railway Service. In 1973, Manuel made the courageous decision to immigrate to Canada with his wife and daughter to escape the fascist regime of the time. While he left behind a career he loved, he worked tirelessly in his new home to ensure a better life and a brighter future for his family. A man of quiet strength and deep integrity, Manuel was known for his gentle nature. He possessed the rare quality of never speaking ill of anyone. His face would light up in a bright smile whenever he saw those he loved.
Manuel will be deeply missed by his beloved wife with whom he recently celebrated 64 years of marriage, Maria Vitalina Dias; his daughter, Zelia (Gianni); and his cherished grandchildren, Daniele (Nicole), Milena (Lucas), Marisa (Alex), and Cristiano.
