Doreen Ann Steele

She passed away peacefully, at Marshall Gowland Manor, surrounded by her loving family on April 10, 2026, at the age of 87. Doreen was the beloved partner of 35 years to Richard Marcella. She was a loving mother to Julia Jones, Kathryn (Henri) Marchildon, Michael Steele, and Foster Steele. She will be dearly missed by her cherished grandchildren: Brian (Becky) Weber, Brandon Weber, Trevor (Nikki) Weber, Brittany (Tyler) Whiteman, Jessie Marchildon, Jacob (Abigail) Marchildon, Zachary (Janelle) Marchildon, Taylor Steele (Jacob Marsh), and Alexandra Steele (Anthony Flanagan).

Doreen Ann Steele was also a proud great-grandmother to Owen and Addison Weber; Aubry Broderick, Sydney, and Priscilla Weber; Kasha and Kalina Weber; and Maxelle Marchildon. She is survived by her dear brother Jim Foster, and was predeceased by her brother Patrick Foster and her sister, Gail Mattingley. Doreen was also predeceased by her parents, Stanley and Juanita Foster, and her husband, George Steele. Doreen was a dedicated and accomplished educator, retiring from St. Patrick’s Secondary School after 35 years of service in the Catholic Separate School Board. Her career was not only meaningful—it was groundbreaking. At a time when leadership roles for women were far less common, she rose to become a principal, helping to pave the way for those who would follow. She went on to lead at the highest levels, serving as President of the Canadian Association of Principals. Also noteworthy is that she was instrumental in establishing the Kids Help Phone which provides mental health support to youth across the country.

On a more personal note: she was known for both her warmth and her competitive spirit as well as her quick wit. She deeply valued her friendships and always made time to enjoy her many friends and colleagues including her “sparkle sisters” and “soul sisters”. Doreen embraced life with enthusiasm and was always ready for her next adventure. She was athletic and enjoyed the outdoors; participating in many sports including skiing (her passion), baseball, golf, biking, roller-skating, and swimming. Boating was another passion, and she proudly captained on many trips including to Mackinac and Tobermory. We would like to acknowledge our sincere appreciation to all the staff at Marshall Gowland Manor, who provided excellent care for Doreen over the past several years. Her kindness, strength, and love will be remembered always.

Cremation has taken place. Family and friends will be received at SFH – McKenzie Blundy Chapel, 431 Christina Street N., Sarnia, on Sunday, April 19, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Benedicts Catholic Church, 1011 Oak Ave, Sarnia, on Monday, April 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. A private interment of ashes will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery.
