EVANS, Edwin “Ed” Evans

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edwin “Ed” Joseph Evans, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 19, 2026, with his beloved wife of 63 years, June Evans, by his side. Ed will be deeply missed by his devoted wife, June; his brother, Don (Evie); and his many cousins, extended family, friends, and the countless people whose lives he touched throughout the years.

Born in Toronto on August 13, 1939, to Elizabeth and Grant Evans, Ed’s family roots ran deep in Uxbridge, where he spent many cherished summers working and playing on the family farms. He always spoke of taking the train from Toronto to Uxbridge to visit his aunt Sadie Johnston. Those early experiences fostered a lifelong love of the land, hard work, and community that remained with him throughout his life.

Edwin “Ed” Evans dedicated much of his life to serving the Uxbridge community. He was a proud member of the Uxbridge Lions Club for more than 50 years, helping organize numerous community events, including serving as co-chair of Spring Water Days. One of his greatest passions was Art in the Park, a project he helped nurture as co-chair and one that brought together artists, neighbours, and visitors for many years. He was also a dedicated member of the Uxbridge Masonic Lodge.

Education and mentorship were important to Ed. For more than 50 years, he taught a Hunter Safety Course in the Uxbridge area, taking great pride in helping generations of hunters learn safe and responsible practices. It always brought a smile to his face when former students recognized him years later and shared memories of taking his course.

Sports were another lifelong passion, playing football in school, church league baseball but his love was hockey. It was through church hockey he met June.  As a certified Ontario umpire, Ed officiated baseball games throughout Uxbridge and the surrounding communities, as well as at the Canadian National Exhibition and Curve Lake First Nations. Whether on the field or in the stands, he loved the camaraderie and spirit of the game.

For many years, Ed owned and operated Evans Jewellers in Uxbridge, where he became known not only for his craftsmanship and knowledge but also for the genuine relationships he built with generations of customers. Even years after retiring, he fondly remembered the people who walked through his shop doors.

Music and faith were at the heart of Ed’s life. He sang, played piano, trombone, baritone and later in life bass guitar. Starting in his teen years, he led worship in church but his joy was being part of the church worship team or as a member of several singing groups, including Crossover, Kings Folk, Soul Foundation, and in Florida, ‘Shades of Grey’. He loved playing in the Young Street Mission.  His music brought joy, comfort, and inspiration to many.

Those who knew Ed will remember his gentle spirit, quiet nature, and wonderful sense of humour. He found great happiness in simple pleasures, in retirement where he and June spent their winters in Florida where he played bass guitar and sang in a group called ‘Shades of Grey’, his travels to Ireland, California to visit friends, and especially his time in Leaskdale, where he loved cutting the grass, tending his grapevines, making homemade jam, and enjoying the outdoors.

Above all, Ed loved being involved in his community and giving of himself wherever he could. His legacy is one of kindness, service, faith, music, friendship, and a life lived with humility and generosity. He leaves behind a community that is richer because of his many contributions and countless acts of quiet kindness.

Services will be held at the Low and Low Funeral Home, 23 Main Street South, Uxbridge (905-852-3073) on Friday, July 24, 2026 at 12p.m. with visitation beginning at 10a.m. Immediately following the service, a reception will be held. Ed will be laid to rest at the Uxbridge Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Oak Ridge’s Hospice, Port Perry or the Benevolent Fund at Uxbridge Baptist Church.
